This one-of-a kind piece is made of polished peach aventurine nuggets connected with golden wire work. It is based on extant examples of gemstone necklaces from ancient Rome. Wire work is done in 22-gauge Artistic Wire (tarnish-resistant gold-plated copper wire). The clasp is 18 gauge.

The ancient Romans used a lot of gemstones, incorporating color into their jewelry. Precious gemstones such as amethyst, pearl, ruby and emeralds were highly valued but even semi-precious stones like carnelian, jet, topaz and amber were popularly used. For more affordable options, colored glass was skilfully crafted to resemble gemstones.
Precious metals such as gold and silver were worn by the wealthy nobles, with more affordable options such as copper or bronze for the masses.

Should tarnish appear on the metal wire work, do not immerse in a liquid jewelry cleaner, but rub tarnish away with a soft jewelry polishing cloth. The gemstones can be restrung in time with new wire if necessary. Always put on your jewelry last and avoid exposing it to sweat, water, lotion, perfume, hairspray etc.
